There is no evidence that these large herons breed in Oasis Valley, or even in the surrounding regions, although they do nest along the Colorado River and in northern Nevada. They are wanderers to our area, spring and fall migrants or post-breeding visitors. They can be seen flying over river meadows and stalking pond edges, spearing small fish such as the native Speckled dace or introduced Mosquitofish or young bass. At times they stay the night up in a tall cottonwood or even a ranch house roof.
